S. S. KIRK DIED LAST SUNDAY MORNING

The Gazette is again called upon to chronicle the death of one of our best and most worthy citizens, S. S. Kirk, who has been a citizen of this county for twenty years. He was regarded as one of our foremost business men. He came here from DeQueen, Ark., and entered the mercantile business at Garvin, where he sold goods for a number of years. He possibly had more acquaintances and friends here and in Sevier County, Ark., than any man in the county or Sevier county.

Mr. Kirk was born in Alabama and moved with his parents to Arkansas, being one of the early settlers in Southwest Arkansas. He was 73 years of age. Mr. Kirk was married in April, 1884 and eight children were born to this union, all of whom survive him. He moved with his family to Garvin in 1910, and entered the mercantile business where he sold goods until 1918 when he moved to Idabel and lived for a number of years, his daughters graduating from the Idabel school, he then moved to Dallas where they might finish their education. After four or five years he removed to McCurtain county settling at Cisco where he has since looked after his farm interest. His life has been outstanding.

He is survived by his wife and eight children, two girls at home and Mrs. R. H. Jackson, Mrs. J.W. White, Mrs. C. B. Greer, all of Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Evlin Roberts of Cisco, G. L. Kirk and J.B. Kirk of Idabel, and ten grandchildren, all of whom were here in attendance at the funeral, except Geo. Louis Kirk, Jr., son of Mr. And Mrs. G. L. Kirk, who is on the ship, "Colorado" stationed at San Diego, Calif., and was unable to attend.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Monday morning at 11:00 o’clock, conducted by Rev. R. -----comb, pastor. There was a large crowd ( of friends) of the family in attendance at the services to pay their last tribute to this noble man. The nice flowers, which were many, was a great token of respect and love for him and his excellent family. The funeral was in charge of the Idabel Funeral Home.

Active Pallbearers were: Pat Ray, A.G. Phillips, Raymond Waters, J. E. Dooley, Herbert Dooley and Guy R. Old. Honorary pallbearers were: Judge T.J. Barnes, J.W. DeWitt, Judge E. C. Armstrong, Judge T.G. Carr, Mayor N. Z. Stephens, D. B. Strawn, Judge E. E. Cochrane, and J. B. Dooley.
