1960, July 4, The Jackson Sun (Jackson, Tennessee) Monday, July 4, 1960 page 13 5 FORMER BOLIVAR RESIDENTS KILLED IN NEW MEXICO BOLIVAR, Tenn.--Five members of the Barnes family, former residents of Bolivar, were killed in a car-truck collision Saturday night near Tatum, N. M. They were en route to Tennessee for the July 4 holidays. Killed were Dan Barnes, 47; his wife, Mrs. Elsie Howell Barnes, 43; their son, Danny, 17; and two daughters, Sandra Barnes, 14; and Mrs. Gloria Jolley, 20, of Memphis. All except Mrs. Jolley were making their home at Venice, Calif. Another son, Gerald Barnes, 10, was injured, as was their son-in-law, the Rev. Galen Jolley, and his daughter, Susan, 2. Services for the victims will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hebron Baptist Church near here with the Rev. Frank Cox, the Rev. Ralph Thomas and the Rev. Bertie Moore, pastor officiating. Burial for the members of the Barnes family will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Jolley will be buried in Memphis. The bodies will be at Shackelford Funeral Home until time for services. Mrs. Jolley was formerly in charge of the coffee shop at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She and her husband had been on a visit with her parents in California, and were returning to Tennessee with them. Mr. Barnes leaves a son, Gordon Barnes of the U.S. Navy at Cape May, N.J.; two daughers, Mrs. Glenn Cox of Bolivar and Mrs. Shirley Kirk of Norfolk, Va.; his mother, Mrs. Babe Barnes of Bolivar; three brothers, Rudolph Barnes of Memphis and James Barnes and Wade Barnes, both of Los Angeles; three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Tillmon, Mrs. Pauline Harris and Mrs. Lucian Hammons, all of Bolivar. Mrs. Barnes leaves her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Howell of Bolivar; five brothers, B. E. (Benny) Howell, Hardeman County sheriff-elect, Preston Howell of Detroit, Mich., James E. Howell, J. B. Howell and Sam Howell, all of Bolivar; four sisters, Mrs. Lena Maxwell and Mrs. R. T. McCalvin, both of Bolivar, Mrs. Lora Maxwell of Middleton and Mrs. Madie Northness of near Washington, D. C.
1968, Jan 5 Lucian Hammons 61, Hickory Valley farmer died about 5 A.M. today at Jackson Madison County General Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services are incomplete pending arrival of a son from Germany. Shackelford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hammons was a lifelong resident of Hardeman County and a member of the Hebron Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Park Barnes Hammons; six sons, Staff Sgt. Jasper Hammons of the US Army in Germany, Marc Hammons and Gene Hammons, both of Bolivar, the Rev. Donald Hammons of Nashville, Ray Hammons and Roger Wayne Hammons, both of Hickory Valley; three daughters, Mrs. Neola Chisholm of Memphis, Mrs. Dorothy Ehrett of Bolivar and Mrs. Linda McClure of Holly Springs, Mississippi; two brothers, Aubrey Hammons of Turlock, California and Robert B. Hammons of Memphis; a sister, Mrs. Elva Stewart of Los Angeles; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The body will be at the funeral home until services.

Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery with Shackelford Funeral Home of Bolivar in charge. Mrs. Barnes died early Wednesday at Western State Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Hardeman County, the widow of William R. Barnes. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Park Hammons of Hickory Valley, Mrs. Nettie Tillman and Mrs. Pauline Harris, both of Bolivar; three sons, Wade Barnes and Rudolph Barnes, both of Memphis, and James Barnes of Los Angeles; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
1974, Sep 10 Tuesday, The Jackson Sun: page 4A: Services for Mr James Lloyd Tillmon 59, were today at 2 P.M. at the Hebron Baptist Church with the Rev. Bertie Moore and the Rev. Ewell McKinnie officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery with Shackelford Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Tillmon died early Monday morning in his home of an apparent heart attack. He was a life long resident of Hardeman County, a member of the Hardeman County Court, a member of the Hardeman County Ambulance Authority, a merchant, and a member of the First Baptist Church. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Nettie Barnes Tillmon, of Bolivar; one daughter, Miss Ann Marie Tillmon, Bolivar; the three half-brothers, Cecil Tillmon and Joe Tillmon both of Bolivar; Charlie Tillmon of Collierville; four half-sisters, Mrs. Dessie Knipper and mrs. Betty Harris both of Bolivar, Mrs. Bessie Barber of Collierville, Mrs. Jane Montgomery of Plano, Texsas.

She was a lifelong resident of Hardeman County, and a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving is her mother, Mrs. Nettie Tillmon of Bolivar.
1990, July 3, Bennie E. Howell, former Hardeman sheriff BOLIVAR Services for Bennie E. Howell, 88, were today at Shackelford Funeral Home. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery near Middleton. Mr. Howell, former Hardeman County sheriff, died Sunday night at Bolivar Community Hospital. He was married to the late Elgie Stepp Howell. They had six children, Inez Knutson of Fargo, N.D., Jerry S. Howell and Crawford G. Howell, both of Bolivar, Earl Howell of Bradford, Den-ville Howell of Pocahontas and Eldon W. Howell of Minden, La.
2001, Apr 10 Tuesday, The Jackson Sun: Graveside Services for Nettie Marie Tillmon 86, will be at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Hebron Cemetery near Middleton. Mrs. Tillmon, co-owner and operator of Tillmon's Grocery, died Monday at Bolivar General Hospital of heart failure.
