Dear Lt. Commander Kirk;
The snails and I have finally gotten a report completed here for you. In addition to the holidays and 7 birthdays in the family for which I planned and held at my home in Dec. and Jan (two parties) we had Christmas. Also during school holiday had 5 of grandchildren over night one night and two another during the New Year. This was after I had gotten over the bronchitis which I had come down with in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I apologize for being so long in getting this report completed.
I waited a long time before I finally heard from the Tenn. State Archives in Nashville about the possible death certificate on your William Rod Barnes who is buried in a cemetery in Hardeman county, Tenn. with other family members. Unhappily they couldn’t find his death. They did make a good search and sent me a filmed index to show names during the year that he was reported on tombstone to have died. Frustrating!!
However, happily, I did get the certified copy from the state bureau of Vital Stats also at Nashville on your Ethel Barnes, daughter of Daniel Jackson and Emily Macon. She died at a hospital at Boliver and she is buried with other family members at Hebron Bapt. Church cem.
With those clues I went forward and located her parents in the census and have compiled a family group sheet on her parents’s and grandparents families. I am enclosing the certified copy of Ethel’s death and have made a resume for my files.
Also before I forget, my husband and I are sending to you for yourself and Melanie a gift certificate for purchase what you would need for the dear baby twins, from a J. C. Penney store. I have always purchased my children’s clothes there and have also purchased a large share of my grandchildren’s clothes there for the holidays. Hope you will find it useful. Please keep us posted about your wife and babies. ($30.00, or $15.00 for each baby)
Now from a rundown of rest of checking for this report I will list the materials alphabetical by state, then general references, then counties alphabetically, etc. as I have done in the past. I will send your cousin, Stephen a shorter cover letter just dealing with the Womack searching and the family sheets that you will be receiving as part of this report. You will also receive a disc with this information as you requested that I do. However, I haven’t gotten the process of logging onto a website as I said I would to do that for you. Therefore, I am sending you this cover letter with photostats and a disc as has been my previous system of reporting to you. I regret that I haven’t had the additional time to get the training to learn how to do that. My computer expert, son in laws have been too busy lately either with ill health or large work loads at work to help with this which they would normally have done. They are all very sweet and helpful when they are not swamped with work at their offices or ill.
I am also hesitant to take on the website because of my experience with another client which has swamped me with requests from his relatives and comments, pro and con about my reports. I would really rather deal with just you, and your cousin, Stephen. He sent me a very kind letter during the New Year which I greatly appreciated thanking me for the report. With my full schedule of clients and also working new ones I don’t have a lot of time to answer E-Mails more than maybe once every one or two weeks.

I had done the Barnes surname previously. Found John Macon - Elizabeth Bowden married in Granville, computer batch #7817901 sheet 71, date marriage 3 July 1786. See disc. Families and family group sheet printouts on Personal Ancestral file to see how connected on your direct line on Macon line.
2. Recheck book An Abstract of N. Carolina wills by Fred Olds, 1760-1800. Reread for all Barnes, Howell, Ingram/Engram names. Also Jackson and Macon names searching. Paid particular attention to Granville and Randolph counties and bordering counties but didn’t find any definite ties to your known families. Still kept notes in case in later searches the connections can be verified. There were no Macon’s at all. Found many Jackson names in many counties.
3. Recheck book Index South Carolina wills from WPA compiled abstracts, filmed series. Book, compiled by Martha Lou Houston, earliest wills through 1800's except Charleston wills which were in separate filmed series and also book abstracts. Will previous to 1787, could also appear in general index to Charleston wills, while wills after 1787 would be in districts and counties after that. Reviewed Barnes, Major, Howell and Jackson names. I had done the early Kirk probates previously and looked them up to review for you.
4. Recheck International Genealogy Index names submissions for Tenn. Research, 1988 edition
Had previously done the Kirk, Marsh, Barnes names in this index. This time did the Major, Macon and Jackson names.
No Majors marriage married to an Elsie (your direct ancestor, widowed in 1880 census and living with son-in-law and daughter.)
Macon surname checking. Found Direct ancestral marriage Isaiah Mumford Macon - Eldyess (spelled various ways in different records) Cox 7 March 1844, Hardeman county, plus those of siblings which I had identified in searching the various censuses. See families on family group sheet printouts and on disc. Copied out all Hardeman county and adjacent county Macon and Jackson names.
5. Index 1850 census Tenn. By Bryan Sistler, #976.8X2p, Volume 1-2. Since only had a few hours of time didn’t make as many photocopies as I usually do. The searches for the death certificates at State Vital stat bureau and also at Tenn. State Archives and library came to $5.00 each, plus reimbursement for part of time from previous report didn’t leave a lot of time to do for the funds sent but I did my best and did put in some extra time to just be able to complete as nearly as possible the families I am enclosing. I read through the Barnes/Barns names carefully making note of where the various families were in relation to where your last known William Rod Barnes was in Shelby county in 1920 and before 1930 is buried in Hardeman county, Hebron Baptist church cemetery.
6. Index 1850 census Tenn. By Byran Sistler, #976.8X2p, Vol. 3, J-M surnames with abstracts from census. Read all Barnes/Barns, Jackson, Macon, & Major names. Isaah M. Macon in Hardeman #812-249 with wife, Eldess and children William, Sarah and James, see family sheet. His father, William and Mother, Martha Macon in Hardeman, #811-249. Whitson Macon, brother of Isaah (Isaiah) and son of William and Martha, Hardeman #810-249. James Majors in Hardeman 23, wife Mary 22, children Thomas 2 and William 7 months. Whether either of children could be possible husband to Elsie, is not proven at this point.

(Thomas Jefferson) Jackson and wife, Martha, are parents of your Daniel P. Jackson and grandparents of your Ethel. Isaiah (Isaah) Mumford Macon is direct ancestor. His parents, William and Martha had died by then in 1857 and are buried in Hardeman county. (In cemetery records previously sent to you for Hardeman county, Tenn. They are buried in the county) See family group printouts or families on disc. 4 pages
8. Index to 1870 census for Tenn. By Sistler checked, volume one A-Lev, #976.8X22s, T. J. Jackson age 44, listed in Hardeman 268. In same series Volume 2, Isaah (Their spelling) Macon age 49 in Hardeman 214. Didn’t have time to look up. There might be additional children to these men not located in l860, or 1880 censuses.

11. Index 1900 census Tenn. For Barnes/Barns names, film 1248561. Looking for William Rod Barnes, or W. R. Barnes or Rod or Rodney or Roderick Barnes? Recheck had done this film previously but wanted to make a 2nd check for be sure I hadn’t overlooked him either with his family or working away from home in another household, and didn’t find him?
Only William R. In bordering county of Hardeman in Harden county ED39 sheet 3 line 87 in 8th civil distr. In family of John D. Barnes born April 1850 in Tenn., wife Rebecca J. born in April year unknown and place unknown. Children Della born Feb. 1878 in Missouri, John born March 1882 in Tenn. And William R. Born Dec. 1885 in Tenn. Your William R. In 1920 gave an age that would make him born about 1880? While cemetery record would make him born in 1882. ?

(Calculating her age from 1920 census) Closest ladies in age with a given name including an E. name were in White county, ED139 sheet 139 sheet 7 line 39 George W. Majors, 33 and wife Ann E. Age 32 born Tenn. Children son Mack and daughter, Cora; and in Bedford county, Distr. #2, ED13, sheet 10, line 25, J. T. Majors 45 born Georgia, wife S. E. 35, born Ga. and children - son L.O. 13, born Ga. and son, Jason E. 11 born Tenn. Son, Daniel A., 8 born Tenn., dau. M. M. Age 6 born Tenn. And son, Wm. T. age 1 born Tenn.
13.Original Census 1900, 12th district, Hardeman county, ED156 sheet 6 line 67 Danial Jackson (their spelling) wife, Amily (should be Emily but spelling in original census), see family group sheet for complete data from this census. Lines too long to get a photocopy for that census. Daniel’s parents in same county ED156, sheet 6A, Jeff Jackson born May 1825, married 56 years in 1900. He and parents born Tenn. Wife Martha born June 1826, was mother of 16 children with 14 living in 1900.

18. Remainder of search for Womack problems in attempting to locate relatives of Abraham Womack who died in Monroe county, Ga., keeping in mind another Abraham Womack also died in Georgia in Hancock county in 1790's. During early time both clients and this other Abraham both in Hancock county at same time before client’s Abraham moved into Jones, Jasper, Monroe counties in deeds with Kirk materials as previously researched and reviewed before proceeding to continue the research.
19. Marriages of Some Virginia Residents by Dorothy Wulfeck, early to 1800, abstracts from various sources in court and church records. #975.5V2w, 2 volumes. Vol. 2, I-Z, read all Womack references. None showing an Abraham and Anna. Had checked previously for possible N. Car. marriage so this time checked for a possible Virginia marriage. Not there. Womack’s referenced on family group sheets will show which ones I used this source reference.
20. I had made an index to earliest wills from the book Virginia Wills and Admin. Index by Clayton Torrence previously, 1632-1800 and for this search, counties that I hadn’t covered for colonial wills in previous searching I completed the earliest ones with this search.

Jesse Womack will dated 28 Feb 1782, wife Sarah, son-William only child named though children are mentioned but not specified in will. Proved 26 Aug. 1782.
21. Cumberland county, Va. wills, film 030738, book 2, pgs. 518-519, Wm. Womack will see family group sheet, Has a son Masenella. However, states youngest children not of age, not specifying which ones are not of age? If this man has children under age in 1786, then his Macenella isn’t likely to be the Rev. War. Vet born back in 1751, as stated in his Rev. war pension application.

Many Womack references in index but ones I looked up didn’t help with our problem.
This completes the report which also includes family group sheets and updated pedigree
chart for you to see additional material garnered for you on your mother’s side of the family. Also I have done a lot more research on the Womacks of various colonial references in many Virginia counties. With this search I have expended a lot more time, but will only bill you for your usual 4 hours, plus 65 cents in photocopies. The certified death certificate and search fees in two places in Nashville came to a total of $10.00 and was covered in the $100 which you previously sent to me. Total therefore for last of this report time in addition to completing the $100.00 funds you sent will be $60.65 , thank you. The billing for $60.65 includes photocopy costs for last of report. No charge for sending Womack data copies on family group sheets to Stephen Kirk.
The only thing on the Womack not completed will be a more detailed search in Chatham county court records, North Carolina which I could complete on your next research project. Received a very nice letter from your Cousin Stephen and will send him a copy of the Womack searching done for this report, including family group sheets. Have made some corrections from previous sheets sent to you as new information seemed to change some of my conclusions, etc.
